What is Candle Magick?
Lighting a candle for a magical purpose is like shooting off a rocket of power toward your goal. Candles have energy and force, if there is something that you need to manifest quickly or you need some immediate change, then a candle will push things through with its own particular intensity.
Candles are infinitely adaptable from calling in abundance and manifestation energies during the new moon or releasing old energies and dissolve chords on the full moon, we can use them for wishes and intentions, or for inviting in ancestors, spirits, deities to a ritual. Candle magick helps us focus our energy, focus our mind and focus our intention on our goal.
Fire in many teachings and ancient lineages is the element of transformation. In Ayurveda fire is digestion the place of transformation of food into energy. In the Q’ero traditions the burning of a despacho or prayer bundle will bring about swift and quick changes. We use that same method in our candle work. Fire itself is inherently mythical and magical. Everytime you light a candle you connect to your oldest ancestors and their deep wisdom about fire’s mystical powers. The element of fire represents action, will and change, it is pure alchemy of change.
Altars & Moon Rituals
Altars are sacred spaces set apart in which to do you magic. Altars can be indoors or outdoors and can be as big and elaborate as a grotto, shrine, or entire room set up with tables and statues or as low key and secretive as a windowsill, a side table, or a shelf. The reason we set up an altar is to set aside a space to do our magical work. An altar is some traditions is seen as the portal to your heart. Creating an altar allows us to add many more supportive magical elements to our spiritual practice. It is the place I go to pray, to set intentions and to honor my guides.
An altar cloth can be placed on the table under your sacred tools and to define the space to hold power and meaning. I always place different materials to represent the 4 elements, a feather for wind, a small glass jar of water, a candle for fire, and a flower or plant to represent the earth. Gemstones and crystals can be placed on altars to be blessed and can bring additional energies and support to our ritual work. Lastly offerings to our ancestors, spirit guides and angels in the form of gifts such as alcohol, flowers, candies, money, chocolates can be placed on the altar to invite them to support your work.
Ritual is an important part of spiritual life, it allows us to leave the mundane world and enter into altered states where we can connect with spirit. In this place magic becomes possible and our intentions get an extra charge. Ritual allows us to let our minds go and lets us get into the liminal states where we can most effectively change things in a spiritual realm, so may call this the quantum field. It is an simple as a daily prayer or waking up every morning to meditate and light some incense. The preparation of the ritual is a signal that you are stepping out of the world and entering into the space where your focus is your magic. Each ritual having a beginning such as preparing for your prayers, the prayers or medicine words themselves and an end where the closing signifies moving out of the sacred space and back into the world.
Candle Magick Session
Each session will take place during the specific time of the moon phases and cycles. We work with these energies of the moon to assist us in our work to bring about positive results. The session will first begin with clearing the space and our bodies, setting the altar with crystals, herbs, oils and sentiments to bring more power and energy to the candle.
Everything created on this earth by humanity has started out as a thought. Through the seed of thought we have the ability to create our lives as we wish them to be. Whether you believe you will NEVER or believe you WILL, sets the course for your life. We use the power of our thoughts and intentions along with some ancient candle charging techniques to dress our candle perfectly for our intended goal and outcome. The candle will be placed on my altar and burned for multiple consecutive days until it has completely burned.
Candle Reading
Candle reading is assessing and reading the flame, wax, and smoke as it is burning and after it is finished. With candle spells we are given the opportunity to check in on the progress of our magick. By reading how the candle burns, how the wax drips to either side, or how quickly it completed will give us guidance on if there are issues surrounding our wishes that need cleaning up or spiritual redirection. Seeing where your spell is going or whats going on behind the scenes of your intentional work can help you anticipate your next plan of action in the material world or in the spiritual realm.
